Whalley Little League from Surrey, British Columbia clinched the last international bid in the 2024 Little League Baseball® World Series (LLBWS), Presented by T-Mobile, with a 10-1 win in the Canada Region Championship game.
Whalley LL took the Region Championship after going 7-1, winning seven straight contests after falling to Medicine Hat LL in its first game. The championship game was a rematch of that matchup, as Whalley LL was able to avenge its 2-0 loss with a resounding 10-1 victory to clinch the final spot on the international side of the bracket in the LLBWS. Despite being shutout in its first game of the tournament, Whalley LL ended with 64 runs scored.
This will be Whalley LL’s seventh trip to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as well as the 11th time a team from Surrey has earned a spot in the LLBWS. It is also the 27th time Canada has been represented by British Columbia at the tournament, the most of any province in the country’s 64 LLBWS appearances. Whalley LL’s most recent appearance at the LLBWS came in 2018, when the team fell in its first game but fought off elimination for two games before falling in Game 21. Soccer star Sydney Leroux grew up playing baseball in the Whalley LL program, competing in the 2002 Canada Region Tournament. She was enshrined in the Little League Hall of Excellence in 2017. Last year’s region champion, North Regina LL, went 1-2 before being eliminated by the Mexico Region champion.
With the first-round matchups for the 2024 LLBWS announced on June 12, just one week after the anniversary of the first-ever Little League game and in the heart of the 65th National Little League Week Celebrations, Whalley LL will start its play against Kuei-Shan Little League of the Asia-Pacific Region in Game 3 of the tournament at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, at Volunteer Stadium.
