Alpenrose Dairy Farm, Home of the Little League Softball World Series, Receives Prestigious Award from State of Oregon

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (May 2, 2008) – The Alpenrose Dairy Farm and the Little League Softball World Series were honored earlier this year, during the annual Oregon Sports Awards gala, with the presentation of the Les Schwab Friends of Sports Award.

This award, in its sixth year, is presented annually to an Oregon-based corporation or group, or Oregon resident for contributions to local sports programs or events.

The Alpenrose Dairy Farm near Portland has been the site of the Little League Softball World Series since 1994. At the awards ceremony, hosted by former National Football League player and sports commentator, Ahmad Rashad, Carl Cadonau, Jr. accepted the award.

During his remarks, Mr. Cadonau said that the three fields located on the Alpenrose Dairy Farm complex where developed by his grandfather, Henry, and his father, Carl, but it was his grandmother’s idea.

“It’s because of my grandmother that these fields are here,” Mr. Cadonau said. “One day, she told Grandpa that she was tired of going out and picking up the roses that the grandkids kept busting in her garden.

“Right after that, Grandpa sent a couple of guys out and they leveled the place … That was 53 years ago,” Mr. Cadonau said. “Two years later, I played on the field as a Little Leaguer.”

Mr. Cadonau credited the community, calling the people of Portland and those who operate the Little League Softball World Series a “driving force” for its success.

Sue Seaver, tournament director for the Little League Softball World Series, also received praise from Mr. Cadonau, who said, “Sue was the person that got the World Series here.”

Carl Cadonau, Sr., a local benefactor and philanthropist, was the founder of Alpenrose Dairy Farm. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 81. Mr. Cadonau is survived by his wife, Virginia Mae, two sons, Randall and Carl; daughters Barbara and Anita, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Cadonau family turned their dairy business that had been in operation since 1916, into a community institution that services the area in many ways. Alpenrose Field, site of the Girls Little League Softball World Series, was constructed in the 1950s along with other baseball fields and has been open to generations of Little Leaguers.

The 2008 Little League Softball World Series will be played Aug. 7-13. More information on the Little League Softball World Series can be found at: www.softballworldseries.com.
